Young Artists' Concerto Competition 2017 Winner
Maxwell is a sixteen-year-old Senior at Holy Cross High School and at Level IV Student at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in the Classical Instrumental Department. His first instrument was the violin where he played in GNOYO’s Sinfonia. Once introduced to the French Horn in 2012, Maxwell quickly excelled and began his musical journey. He has studied with his current horn teacher, Mollie Pate, principal hornist for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013. He currently plays 8 instruments and actively composes music.
Maxwell has been a member of the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jean Montes since 2012 where he currently plays principal Horn for their Symphony. In June 2015 Maxwell played with GNOYO as they performed on a five state tour that culminated in New York with a performance at Carnegie Hall. He has performed at Jazz Fest, Coats for Kids as well as Braham’s and Wine with Dr. Jee Yeoun Ko and other students from NOCCA. He has also performed as soloist and with GNOYO Chamber Music Group at the New Orleans Art Museum as well as the French Quarter Festival for the past three years. He has participated in LPO’s Side by Side and LPO’s Play Dat. Maxwell was a member and performed with the Tulane 504 Ensemble, Loyola Bourgeois Band and the New Orleans Volunteer Orchestra.
Maxwell was nominated and selected to perform in the Carnegie Hall High School Honors Performance Series in February 2017. He was also a concerto finalist and selected to participate in the Child Prodigy Series with the Philadelphia International Music Festival in 2017. Maxwell has received additional specialized training and education through: The Philadelphia International Music Festival 2017, the Curtis Institute Summerfest 2016 in Philadelphia, PA, the Summer Horn Institute at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan as well as GNOYO Summer Musical Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana for the last 5 years. Additionally, Maxwell has performed with GNOYO’s Wind Ensemble which placed 3rd in the NOLA Chamber Fest in 2017. He has placed in Senior High Honor Band every year since 9th grade and this year is a member of the All-State Orchestra.
Maxwell aspires to attend to music conservatory upon completion of high school and eventually become a composer and conductor.
Maxwell will be playing the first movement of Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3.
