Violist Catherine Matushek is a native of Pittsburgh, PA and has frequently been a substitute with the Louisiana Philharmonic for several seasons. She is thrilled to be onboard full-time with the LPO for the 2018 – 2019 season. Before moving to New Orleans, Catherine was a member of the Erie Philharmonic, Firelands Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed with the Canton, Ashland, and Mobile Symphonies and is a member of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.
Catherine completed her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Jeffrey Irvine and Lynne Ramsey. She has been a participant in music festivals such as the Encore School for Strings, Castleman Quartet Program, Heifez International Music Institute, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the National Repertory Orchestra. Catherine has received solo and chamber music coaching from Peter Salaff, Paul Neubauer, Donald Weilerstein, Samuel Rhodes, and Roger Tapping.
A passionate educator, Catherine completed her Suzuki pedagogy training at the Cleveland Institute of Music with teacher-trainer Kimberly Meier Sims, and has taught at the Cleveland School of the Arts, the Sato Center for Suzuki Studies, as a teaching assistant at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and for El Sistema-inspired programs in Cleveland and New Orleans. She currently teaches 15 private students at the Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts in Mandeville.
When she isn’t practicing or teaching Catherine enjoys cooking, reading, listening to podcasts, practicing yoga, fostering kittens, and napping with her cats Clara and Henry.
