Backkyoung Cho is a distinguished cellist who has made significant contributions to various renowned orchestras and ensembles. As of 2023, he is an active member of the cello section with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and serves as a substitute cellist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra.
Backkyoung Cho's exceptional skills have been recognized through numerous auditions. In 2023, he won the cello section audition with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and was selected as a finalist for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also a finalist in the 2023 Arkansas Symphony Orchestra cello section audition.
In 2022, Backkyoung Cho performed as a fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, leading notable performances including the American debut of George Benjamin. He has collaborated with world-class conductors such as Andris Nelsons, John Williams, Stefan Asbury, and JoAnn Falletta, and served as the principal cellist for the George Benjamin performance.
Beyond his orchestral work, Backkyoung Cho has also distinguished himself as a chamber musician, performing during the Tanglewood Music Festival at Seiji Ozawa Hall. From 2021 to 2022, he was a member of the Boston Conservatory Honor Piano Trio.
Backkyoung Cho earned his Bachelor's degree in Music from the Korean National University of Arts under Professor Kang-Ho Lee, and later obtained his Master's degree and Artist Diploma from the Boston Conservatory under Professors Rhonda Rider and Andrew Mark. His dedication is further highlighted by his participation in masterclasses with prominent cellists such as Blaise Déjardin, Norman Fischer, Arto Noras, Antonio Menesses,and Astrid Schween
